ברוך אתה ה’ חנון
BLESSED ARE YOU HASHEM, MERCIFUL ONE

Hashem doesn’t just forgive, rather He is a חנון, a “merciful one” – חנינות is Hashem’s regular practice and His fundamental attitude. In truth, חנון means more than just “merciful”. חנון denotes giving for absolutely nothing (from the word חנם, free). Hashem gifted man with a חן so that he should find favor in His eyes and thus receive forgiveness from Him when he repents. It is for this forgiveness gratis that we bend our knees in humble thanks to Hashem, the merciful one.
