AND KINDLINESS

חסד here has a double meaning. We request, firstly, that Hashem’s חסד be upon us to give us in ‘abundance’ and with generosity beyond our basic needs. In addition, we intend to request of Hashem that He bless us with חסד itself, that is, that He bestow upon the world a spirit of חסד, that all men be moved to deal kindly with each other, and, in particular, with us, Hashem’s beloved People.
