Q:
What are a few good hanhagos that one should enact in one’s new home?
A:
In one’s new home we could suggest – among a thousand such suggestions – that people who walk past the mezuzah should for one second think what the mezuzah is saying. That’s what it’s for.
Isn’t it a pity? In a new home, וכתבתם על מזוזות ביתך ובשערך. For one second think what the mezuzah is saying. The mezuzah is reminding you of something.
Now there’s so much in a mezuzah to talk about. So if people will practice that when they walk past the mezuzah or even when you’re sitting down at the meal, whether it’s Shabbos or weekdays, take at least one time and look at the mezuzah.
When you speak on the telephone, take one look at the mezuzah at least while you’re talking on the telephone.
So your whole house now becomes a demonstration of Toras Hashem. On all sides.
Otherwise, you forget all about it. It becomes mitzvos anoshim melumadah.
Now that’s only one of a thousand suggestions. But it’s a practical suggestion – to utilize the mezuzah at least for a second as you pass by or when you’re sitting in your home or when you’re talking on the telephone, take one look at the mezuzah and it’s going to have an effect on everybody in the house all the days of their lives.
