Q:

Is it proper for a frum person to own a dog?

A:

A dog is no sin; but it’s no mitzvah either because a dog is a big nuisance.

Now, if people kept dogs only because of usefulness, we wouldn’t say anything.  But you have to know in almost every instance, a dog is a demonstration of assimilation.  He’s doing it only because everybody else does it.  Most people have dogs not because they need them.  As he walks down the street with a dog at his heel, he feels that he’s a country gentleman, a hunter.  He has his dog there with him. He feels that’s the right way to be – a real goy!

But if a person wants a dog for some practical purpose, nobody can criticize him.
