Q:

What should we learn from the riots in Los Angeles*?

A:

It’s too recent to comment on it fully but there’s a great deal to talk about.
Do you know whom the blacks attacked? They attacked the Koreans. They burned Korea-Town. Eight hundred Korean businesses were burned down. Why were the Koreans attacked? They’re not the ones who enslaved the blacks during the period of slavery.
The answer is the Koreans are the greatest reproach to those blacks. They’re recent immigrants and yet they don’t take welfare. They’re not on dope. They’re not criminals. They make businesses. And that burns those blacks up. They’re ignited, they’re inflamed by envy. And that’s the reason. And therefore we have to know that this was a demonstration not of any righteous indignation. No. It was a demonstration of plain wickedness and there’s nothing that can be done about it except police brutality.
(May 1992)
*Riots in May 1992, sparked by the acquittal of four LAPD officers who had been videotaped beating Rodney King, an African American man, during a traffic stop in March 1991. The verdict led to widespread outrage and ignited violent riots, especially in South Central Los Angeles.
