Q:

If the world is a creation of plan & purpose, why is there such a big waste of energy? Like so much sunlight that goes out into space for nothing.

A:

And the answer is, this is only from the point of view of human beings. Because from our point of view, if you would put instead of two rows of lights here in the ceiling, you’d put ten rows of lights, so then it’s a valid question, why we’re wasting energy. Because it shows up in the electric bill at the end of the month.
But Hakodosh Boruch Hu is rich.  לי הכסף ולי הזהב.  Expenditure of energy means nothing at all to Him.  You have to look from His viewpoint.  And Hakodosh Boruch Hu gives. פותח את ידך – He opens up His hand and He showers.  And it’s done that way because He wants us to see His greatness.  And I’ll explain this briefly.
Why is there so much space in the world?  That’s a good question.  The world could have been a little closed-in globe.  Why do you have to have almost infinite space?  Do you know there’s so much space in the world?  You can plan, if you want, real estate developments that have no end.  If you want to make them on floating rafts that will be let out into space it could go forever.  Someday they might think of such plans. There’s so much room!  Why?
And the answer is, one of the purposes of creation is to show us the greatness of Hashem.  You have to recognize the gedulas Hashem.  And to recognize His greatness, we need vastness.
Now a man from here once told me he went to the Grand Canyon and he stood on his brink and he was gasping at the majesty of the scene!  That great crack in the surface of the earth!
But it’s only a crack! If you’d go up to the moon and look down, you’d see it’s only a crack.  You wouldn’t see any canyon.  It’s only a crack.  To Hakodosh Boruch Hu, is it anything? But the reason you have the Grand Canyon is because to us it’s grand!  It is grand!  It takes too much time to travel there, but it would be worth it if it was just to walk around the corner; it would be kidai to go and take a good look at it.  It would make you gasp.  It would give you a little respect for Hakodosh Boruch Hu. Because people think they’re it. You don’t realize how nothing you are.  And so you have to see the gedulas Hashem.  You have to see the Grand Canyon.  You have to see big mountains.  You have to see big oceans.  And that makes you think of the greatness of the One who made them.
But that’s nothing compared to the vastness of space.  And that’s the purpose. When you look up and you see how billions of miles, billions of light years! You can’t calculate!  The logarithm would come to an end because the space is so vast, so endless!
And that helps you understand a little bit. Because the whole universe, you know what it is?  I’ll give a little mashal and it’s not true either.  It’s too little.  The whole universe is one blood corpuscle in the veins, kavayochol, of Hakodosh Boruch Hu.  The whole universe, from one end to the other, if there is an end, it could be one little corpuscle in the body, kavayochol, of Hakodosh Boruch Hu.  Of course He doesn’t have a body.
And therefore, Hakodosh Boruch Hu causes the sun to shower such a profuse abundance of energy, even though only a small amount hits this earth surface, but it’s worth it.  Because it gives us an idea of the gedulas Hashem.  It’s not what hits the earth surface that counts.  It’s what leaves the sun’s surface that counts.  And that’s the purpose.
And therefore, when a man gets married and he cohabits, five hundred million sperm enter at one time and only one of them is going to fertilize the ovum. And that’s something for scientists to learn and to get a little bit of respect for the Creator who is so great.
To equip one of these sperms, you know, would take more know-how and more cost than sending a manned missile to Mars.  One little sperm out of five hundred million is so complicated.  You know one little sperm is carrying with it billions of details, perfected for how to carry out not only the details, but how to carry them out and reproduce that. Like one person explained, the DNA plan in one cell is like ten thousand fat reference volumes. Big fat reference volumes!  That’s an understatement!
Now, one little sperm out of the five hundred million ejaculated by a normal healthy male at one time would need all the governments of the world –  not the United States alone – all the resources pooled together of all the countries to make one little sperm; to equip it with all its equipment. And they wouldn’t be able to do it even after that.
And that’s all done for the purpose of letting you know that the four hundred and ninety nine million, whatever remains after you subtract one, that’s all for the purpose of letting us know עד היכן הדברים מגיעים – how great is Hakodosh Boruch Hu!
