Q:
What is the difference between teshuva from yirah, from fear, and teshuva from ahava, from love? Why is teshuva me’ahava a higher madreigah?
A:
Teshuva me’yirah means when a person is forced at knifepoint to do teshuva. He sees that he is already in dire trouble and he thinks of ways and means to extricate himself from his tzoros; so he tries teshuva.
But the man who does teshuva because he loves Hashem and he is grateful to Hashem for His kindliness, certainly it shows this man is more loyal.
Let’s say you have a son and he is in a different town learning in the yeshiva. Now, if the son writes to you when he needs money, you are happy to get a letter from him. Every time he needs money he writes a letter to you. Very nice.
But suppose he writes letters even when he does not need money; so you appreciate that more.
And therefore there is no comparison between the two.
