Q:
Is it okay to listen to a conservative gentile on his talk radio show?
A:
Is it right to listen to a more decent radio commentator?
Of course it’s much less harm than if you listen to the liberals. However, you should know that the best goy is a leitz. And the less you have to do with umos ha’olam in general, the better. Watch out for associating with any kind of umos ha’olam.
Sometimes we have to show that we agree with the good ones in the world but as much as possible you should follow the principle that הן עם לבדד ישכון – we’re a nation that dwells alone. You have to be alone.
Not only among gentiles – among Jews too. You have to watch out even among better type Jews because there are many times when there’s michsholim, there’s trouble, in mixing with people. Alein iz de neshama rein – The more you’re alone, the better off you are. Of course, if you’re together with tzaddikim, that’s the best company but otherwise solitude is one of the biggest achievements for a person.
Now today we don’t appreciate that but it’s still as true as ever. If a person finds opportunities to be with himself even for a few minutes, that solitude is a very great opportunity. If you’re always among people, then you’re going to be like they are – you’ll think like they do. It’s important to give yourself a chance to make progress on your own and to free yourself from the trammels and the chains of your environment. And that won’t happen if you’re listening to a gentile on the radio – even if he’s the best of them.
