Rav Avigdor Miller on Dale Carnegie

Does the Rav recommend the reading of Dale Carnegie’s books?

Some people here might not know who Dale Carnegie is. He is a man who wrote a few books about succeeding in life. For example, How To Win Friends and Influence People is a very good book to help you learn basic skills in getting along with people.

Now, just like you’re going to read a book that tells you how to be a success in computers or accounting or anything else you have to do, you also have to read some books about how to succeed in dealing with people. In How To Win Friends, he tells you how to be a success in dealing with customers and dealing with people in general. Very practical advice. And I can tell you that there is no harm at all in reading those books. His book on public speaking will help you be a successful speaker and his books will help you succeed in general. No harm at all.

Now, that doesn’t mean, however, that you’ll get שלימות or that you’ll get עולם הבא from reading his books. It’s like anybody who works hard to make a living. It doesn’t mean you’ll get עולם הבא for being a successful businessman. But it’s something you have to do to support your family. And therefore, if a person wants to benefit from expert advice in learning how to deal with people and with customers, then there is no reason that he shouldn’t read Dale Carnegie’s books. In general, for the practice of dealing with customers, and dealing with people in general, he has good advice. Also, he has an excellent book on public speaking that can be very helpful for many people.
