Rav Avigdor Miller on Dark History

Q:
Did any of the שבטים marry black women?

A:
Now, I’m not going to rely on any kind of statements other than the חומש itself. And in the חומש we have no statement that any black woman was ever involved with the Jews. When it says that Moshe Rabeinu was married to an אשה כושית (Bamidbar 12:1) it does not mean an Ethiopian woman. You have to know that Kush in Torah language, and in Gemara language, refers to countries that are Hamitic in origin, but not necessarily black. Never is it mentioned black skin, a black colored person, in the חומש. Therefore there’s no real foundation for such reports.

There are מאמרים, yes, there are מדרשים. But the מדרשים are not unanimous. And therefore, I prefer to talk here only according to the פשוטו של מקרא, the simple meaning of the verses. And according to the plain meaning of the פסוקים, black people did not figure in the history of the חמשה חומשי תורה at all.
