Rav Avigdor Miller on The Abusive Boss

print

Q:

How does one deal with an abusive boss?

A:

Always be nice to him. Always be nice to your boss. If you can, shake hands with him every morning when you come in to work and greet him warmly. Smile at him always. And whatever he says, you should say, “Yes, yes, yes.” And keep looking for a better job.

But he should not know that you’re looking for a better job. No, not at all. He should just know that you’re doing the best that you can right now. And that applies to all people. No matter what type of job you have, you should always keep your eyes out for a better job. But while you’re on this job, make sure that you’re doing the best that you possibly can. You must always be a loyal employee.

Lavan was a very abusive boss. Much worse than your boss.  And the pesukim tell us that Yakov Avinu remained a loyal worker till the end. Loyalty is so important that the Torah goes out of its way to tell us details about Yakov Avinu’s loyalty to Lavan. So make sure to treat your boss well and work hard. And keep your eyes out for a new job.
