How can a ba’al teshuvah explain to his relatives who are not observant that he cannot attend their simchos where there is mixed dancing and other wrong things?
And the answer is a ba’al teshuvah should tell the people like this: “You know,” he says, “I have changed my religion. Before I was Jewish but now I’m a Jew. Being Jewish you can do all these things but a Jew cannot do these things. It’s against my religion.”
And that’s how he should explain to them. If they’ll say, “We’re also Jews,” so you say, “Are you keeping Shabbos? Do you wear tefillin? So you’re not Jews.”
And therefore anybody who is a Jew is now different from what he was before. Before he was Jewish and now he is a Jew.
