Q:
In davening we ask Hashem that He should blow a great shofar. When is that going to be? And what’s the purpose of the shofar blast and how will it be blown?
A:
The shofar is going to be blown when the time comes to blow it. We understand that the time is that when Hakodosh Boruch Hu sees that the world has to be informed that there’s going to be a big change. Up until now the world was asleep and the purpose of the shofar is to wake them up.
It’s like the Rosh Hashanah shofar; it’s to wake us up. That’s what the Rambam says: עוּרוּ יְשֵׁנִים מִשְּׁנַתְכֶם וְּנִרְדָּמִין הָקִיצוּ מִתַּרְדְּמַתְכֶם – You people who are fast asleep, awaken from your slumber! That’s what the shofar of Rosh Hashana says.
So when you’re asleep on Rosh Hashana, which of course we are – you have to know that; we’re asleep all our lives – and you hear the shofar blowing, “Wake up!” you’d better wake up. Now, of course when you wake up and you don’t know where to go, what to do, that’s a great pity of course. You wake up, “What?! Where?! What?!” It’s a pity. But at least you have to wake up. Then, you should get busy and find out where to go.
The same with the shofar in the days of Moshiach. The time will come when Hakodosh Boruch Hu will let the world know that they were asleep until now. They didn’t understand, they didn’t see, they didn’t hear. And now they wake up and they should be ready for very great changes that will take place.
And Hakodosh Boruch Hu will blow the shofar. Exactly what form the shofar will take – if it will be blown over an international network or there’ll be a sound that will come mishmei marom – this I’m not able to tell you. But Hakodosh Boruch Hu has ways of letting the world hear the truth; whatever it is, you can be sure it’ll be in the most efficient way possible.
