Rav Avigdor Miller on Tznius Conventions

print

Q:

Rav Miller speaking: A young lady passed up a piece of paper with a question and she’s been asking a number of times the same question.  Last week she put this question on five slips of paper. So I must answer.  She asks, “Why is it that you must wear stockings if they’re transparent?”

A:

Well, that’s an earthshaking problem but I must answer.  If the stockings are transparent, so what’s the use of wearing them?

And the answer is there’s a certain convention that you should comply with.  So even though in halachah it could be that transparent stockings are not good enough but at least it’s a convention.  We have to conform to minimum conventions.  The principle of tznius may not be satisfied by transparent stockings, but at least it’s a gesture in that direction.  And therefore keep it up.
